Doctorate Business Leadership (DBL)
Join over 15000 international students from Europe, USA and the rest of the world.
MDC SA has developed a unique partnership with University of South Africa (UNISA) to offer locally supported distance education programmes specifically for working people.
UNISA – The “MEGA” University The main partner of MDCI for this programme is the highly regarded University of South Africa (UNISA) – classed as one of the 11 leading very large universities. Founded in 1873, UNISA gained its University Royal Charter in 1876. It became the world’s first completely Distance Education University in 1946.
MDC SA is delighted to work with UNISA in the development of this programme, and has an excellent reputation for the delivery of distance education to busy individuals.
We can now offer:
2-3 Year Degree of Doctor of Business Leadership (DBL) (Extending the boundaries of business science. Generation, development and exploration of management theory.)
A doctoral degree is the highest academic qualification a university can award. It indicates that the successful student is able not only to collect, arrange, and use existing knowledge, but can also contribute to that knowledge.
The DBL programme has been structured in such a way that it guides and supports selected students in research into appropriate contemporary management issues.
Objectives · The generation, development, and identification of management theories; · The extension of research into all aspects of management; · The education and development of specialists in management, and · The development of practitioners and researchers.First Registration The applicant applies for admission under cover of a letter or registration form. An appropriate and recognized masters degree in Business Leadership or Business Administration is a prerequisite. If the applicant is deemed academically acceptable, full registration with all benefits accruing from this, i.e. access to the library, promoter/supervisor, etc, can be immediately effected. Students may be asked to pass one or more departmental examinations if so required by the Director and Executive officer of the SBL. The DBL Process Complete a reading programme prescribed by the School of Business Leadership (SBL) at the University of South Africa to the satisfaction of the Director and Executive Officer. This reading list will be sent to the student by the Administrative Officer DBL, together with further information regarding the DBL programme.
Submit a preliminary title and draft research proposal in order to allocate resources. (Send to: The Director, Research and Community Activities). The proposal should highlight the following:
· The subject on which the research is to be conducted · A study of the existing literature in the proposed field of study, indicating the gap in the current body of knowledge, preliminary formulation of hypothesis where applicable · The expected contribution to the existing body of knowledge · Research methodology and design.
The proposal is not necessarily the final research proposal, but serves as a guideline to determine whether: · The subject is suitable for the doctoral research; · The required data is obtainable; · The SBL can provide satisfactory professional guidance; and · Whether further specific reading will be prescribed by the SBL.
The student, in collaboration with the Director or another academic in the relevant department (possibly the intended promoter/supervisor), subsequently finds a suitable title and submits an acceptable research proposal during the first year of registration. Reregistration for a second year will not be allowed without the title and promoter/supervisor having been finalized. Where the expected scope of the research requires input from a joint promoter/supervisor, an additional member may be appointed. Joint promoters/supervisors and other members of the research committee may be drawn from other departments within or outside the University. (It is SBL policy to collaborate with members of the University at large).
Presentation 1 – Expanding the reading list
The candidate should attend at least one colloquium, presenting a working paper on a topic based on the reading programme referred to above and extending this to the specialist field the candidate wishes to research.
Following the first presentation and the completion of the special field reading list, the candidate may be required to pass an oral examination based on the above.
Students must subsequently submit to the research committee for approval three written progress reports (in addition to the working paper mentioned above). These have to be presented at the DBL colloquia (of which there are two during the course of the year).
Presentation 2 – Research proposal
The document should contain an in-depth discussion of the appropriate published literature and previous research results as well as a broad exposition of the total planned study. It should identify a statement of the problem or hypothesis (if appropriate).
Presentation 3 – Methodology and design
This entails proposals regarding the research design and methodology, data gathering and analysis, quantitative or qualitative research, as well as an overview of the total planned study.
Presentation 4 – Research findings
This presents a summary of the major findings and results of the study and the impact of the research.
Every report must be presented at the colloquium and approved by the research committee before the next report may be submitted. The promoter/supervisor is responsible for including the committee’s evaluation in the student’s file. Defense of thesis
Students may be required to defend their theses before a panel of examiners. This will be done through the process of a presentation as well as a question and answer session with the candidate.
DBL Colloquia
Two colloquia are held every year. They provide open forums for discussion of student presentations of the research reports. It is strongly recommended that all registered doctoral students attend these colloquia since they provide opportunities for constructive interaction between academics and participants. The costs of such visits (including travel and accommodation) must be carried by the student, if required by the university.
Personnel at the SBL as well as members of research communities outside the SBL are invited to attend and are invited to pinpoint obscurities and give advice.
How it Works The method of teaching this course is highly innovative. We call it “locally supported distance education” : learning through University supplied materials and MDCI administration and resource centres. It is based on MDCI “On-location” method of teaching which is so successful for postgraduate study here in the Middle East.
Locally Supported Distance Education A specially designed study method based on Unisa’s extensive competence in distance education. This expertise is supplemented locally by MDCI’s considerable experience in supporting over 500 postgraduate students close to their homes but distant from the university. Advantages of Locally Supported Distance Education · Flexibility: you study at your own pace · Convenience: you study from home · Local administrative support: through MDC SA’s regional offices · On-line support: through Unisa’s Student on Line (SOL) system · Telephone and email support: from Unisa faculty · On-line library access: for the your all-important research materials (journals, books, papers, etc) · Textbook ordering facility: speedy service at reasonable prices for your books.
